The auxiliary air valve increases idle speed when the engine is cold by allowing more air into the engine. It helps prevent the engine from stalling before it reaches operating temperature, especially when the oil is thicker and combustion is less efficient. As the engine warms up, a thermostatic element in the valve closes, restoring the idle to normal RPMs.
