The auxiliary air valve increases idle speed when the engine is cold by allowing more air into the engine. It prevents the engine from stalling before reaching its operating temperature, especially when the oil is thicker, and combustion is less efficient. As the engine warms up, the valve's thermostatic element closes, restoring the idle to normal.
